Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Proverbs 18:21 (KJV)
The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. Romans 8:6 (NIV)
Hello there, thanks for stopping by. Today we will be reminding ourselves of the power of our words. Hope you learn, grow and bear fruits in your life as you read through today’s post.
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and the tongue is controlled by your thoughts. If your mind is full of negative thoughts, your words will be negative. If your mind is full of positive thoughts, your words will be positive. Your mind is the most powerful influence on your tongue. If you can change your mind, change your thinking, then you can change your words and the outcome of your life.
The mind governed by the flesh is death: what is the flesh? The flesh in my understanding is the natural – what I can see, taste, touch, feel, hear. If your thoughts are solely based on your five senses the bible says you will experience death. How? When your thoughts are based just on your senses, your words will be in line with what you can see, taste, fell and touch and that would only produce death in your life.
The mind governed by the Spirit: The Sprit can stand for the Word of God or the HolySpirit.
“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life”. John 6: 63 (KJV)
Gods words are spirit and life. Most times when the word speaks, it is contrary to what I can see, feel, touch, taste or hear in the natural. God says, when I give you my word, if you will believe it, set your mind on it (think about what I said) and speak in line with what I have said, then you will give permission to the life in that word to invade the natural and become real in your life.
Allow me to give you an illustration:
Let’s meet a friend of mine called Charisa, she wants to take a certain certification in her field that cost her $1,000. However, she does not have the money to make this payment and her earnings in a month does not give her any room to save. She earns just enough to cover her monthly expenses. Anytime she thinks of the certification, she gets sad, she complains, she questions: God how am I ever going to pay for this? I don’t have money. God I’m stuck. I’m never going to be able to take this certification. How can God love me and let me be this broke?
Even though Charisa is a Christian and has prayed endlessly for God’s provision, she continues to speak the same words because she cannot see anyway in the natural God can provide for her. she finds that she months have gone by and she still has no money to make the payment.
Charisa learns about speaking in line with God’s word and decides to try it out. She learns that the bible says God has supplied all your needs according to the riches of His glory. Hmmm that is great, she says. All my needs are met. She begins to learn to set her mind on it and speak it. Then the battle begins, her mind is bombarded with thoughts that feed her five senses
- You don’t have any money in your account, you can check to confirm before you start saying all your needs are met. They are not, your account shows that
- You monthly income cannot pay for this certification, all your needs are not met, go see your pay check and verify. Stop talking about all your needs are met
This is where it gets real. Should I continue to speak the word of God that I cannot see and just ignore what I can see? It doesn’t make sense to keep saying my needs are met when I can see in the natural that it is not. Anyway, she says; I’ll srick to my decision of believing and speaking the word of God. She continues to speak the word that all her needs are met. She refuses to become sad when the facts of her need bombard her mind. She counters the thoughts with the word.
Then one day a friend of hers visits and had a taste of her home-made banana bread. She tells Charisa to make her some for her party and she pays for it. Charisa makes a little profit from that. After the party, people started asking about the banana bread and placed orders too. Charisa then realizes she’s in business. A month after she was able to pay for her certification. She is in awe of how God provided. Not only is her certification paid for, she now has a business and can now have some savings.
You know I sometimes wish I can switch off my mind, because it seems to be one of the biggest hindrances to my faith walk. But since God didn’t give us the option of switching it off rather He said to renew it, I’m learning to stay committed to that process of renewing my mind and speaking in line with God’s word.
