2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters
John 7:37-39:
Now on the last day, the great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'” But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
The Holy Spirit is sometimes referred to as water in the scriptures. He’s the one that satisfies our thirst. Water is one of the most essential needs of an animal. Studies show that animals can survive for long without food but not without water. Water is a major component of cell, blood, body tissue and other secretions. Some functions of water in a sheep include
- Transports Nutrients –
- Necessary for metabolic reactions in the body-
- Eliminates waste
Even though there is a certain percentage of water in pasture, saliva, and other parts of the body, the sheep still needs a large intake of water in other for its digestive system to function as should. This is no different in a Christian, God’s sheep. Even though we have a measure of the Holy Spirit in us as believers, we constantly need to drink of the Spirit in order to function.
Sometimes as believers we find ourselves in a position where we have a good understanding of the word. We have laid down and chewed on the word, yet we observe that our lives do not reflect the knowledge we have. You understand that God has given us power to live above sin but you find yourself constantly telling lies. You understand that Gods will is for you to prosper, yet you live in poverty. In such places, we are invited to drink. In such situations, our Shepherd leads you beside still waters so we can drink of the Spirit. It is the Spirit that empowers us to do, He comes with power. Always remember to spend time to drinking from the still waters after feeding on the word.
Just like water the Holy Spirit does the following in us:
Transports Nutrients – He brings to our remembrance the word we have ingested. This is why you must lie down in green pasture before drinking by the still water. It is the word on the inside of you that He brings to your remembrance. If you have nothing on the inside, He has nothing to work with, nothing to remind you of
Necessary for metabolic reactions in the body- The Holy Spirit causes the power in the word to be released into our lives and situations. He is the power behind the miraculous. As we pray and declare God’s word, He is that power at work brining that word into manifestation. Just as water triggers metabolism in body to release energy stored in food so the Holy spirit triggers the releases of the power in God’s word, changing our lives and situations. This happens in the place of prayer.
Eliminates waste: Water in the body is also responsible for the elimination of waste. The Holy Spirit does same for us. The scriptures say He brings conviction to our heart. He tells us when we’re wrong. He tells us the things we need to get rid of as we grow in our walk with God. He helps us eliminate wrong mindsets, breaks strongholds, pulls down vain imaginations and thoughts that make the word of no effect.
It is important to always be filled with the Spirit, scriptures say the letter killeth, it is the Spirit that gives live. Take times out regularly to drink of the living water.
